After another couple weeks of waiting around, the head gaskets for the 383 finally showed up, and I picked them up on Tuesday. This means I could finally measure for pushrods and get those ordered. Over the course of the week’s evenings I got the cam installed and timed, and today I mocked up one of the heads so I could measure for pushrods.
Bolts are just snug, don’t want to compress the gasket yet
Except when I went to put the rocker studs in the head, they weren’t there. Emptied the whole box, I have a bag of guide plates but no rocker studs. The 7/16" studs were an extra cost upgrade I paid for, but alas they are nowhere to be found. I can’t measure for pushrods without the rockers in place, which I can’t put in place without the studs...

Any word from the company about getting what you ordered?

The heads were shipped to the machine shop in April, where he checked them over, then they sat until I picked (what was supposed to be*) everything up. I’m in contact with him but have serious doubts there is any sort of expedient resolution to this.
*Head gaskets couldn’t be ordered until the block was decked, which is fair. There are also like a dozen other parts inexplicably still “on the way” that have been ordered and paid for for months.

That is very much not my sort of music... also I’m not angry, just incredibly frustrated with the whole things. This engine was supposed to be done early/mid summer but has just been perpetual delays.

Damn sounds like the machine shop is most of the problem here, but blame dosent help. Will talking with the shop help or are they over it and,”waiting on parts” that are actually backordered and havnt told you

Usually the studs have 7/
16-14 threads in the head side. This is a normal UNC thread so you could use a suitable bolt to make temporary install for measuring. You might need to find some reference
stud lengths first of course.

I think a lot of stuff was backordered at some point but he claims everything except the fuel pump and clutch has shipped, and those will be ordered “
soon”. That said, if that is the case my ignition system has been in the mail for a month. The guy the owns the place is a nice guy and very knowledgeable
(has been doing this for decades, and his father before him) but seems to be having trouble keeping up with things. I’m running out of patience, unfortunately.

I’d do something like this (I probably have 7/16UNC all-thread somewhere) but with it being such a specific geometry and precision, I want to measure it with the actual parts so I don’t buy pushrods, get them in, and find out something was not quite right with my jig and have to do it all over.
